What is a DXF file & Do I need one?
A DXF file is a digital drawing that tells our waterjet exactly where to cut — every line, arc, and curve in your part. It’s the most common file format for cutting work, but it’s not the only way to get started.
If you already work in CAD software, export your design as a DXF or DWG file and send it through with your quote request. If you don’t have a file at all, that’s fine too — send us a sketch, a sample part, a photo, or just a description with measurements, and we’ll draw it up for you in AutoCAD.
Preparing your own DXF file
If you’re drawing the file yourself, a few things make the process smoother on both ends:
- Draw the part at full size (1:1 scale) — we don't adjust based on written dimensions in the file
- Include one dimension on the file so we can double-check the scale
- Make sure all lines and arcs are joined into closed shapes — gaps or overlapping lines can confuse the cutting software
- Remove labels, title blocks, and any construction lines — just the shapes you want cut
- Let us know whether your file is in millimetres or inches
